Kichizo's wood

I will explain the wood used in Yoshikura's furniture.(Please note that there are various theories.)

イタヤカエデ
ウェンジ

Wenge

A broad-leaved tree of the leguminous family. They live in Zaire and Cameroon in Africa. It is very similar to Tagayasan, one of the three major Karaki woods, and is sometimes used as a substitute. The heartwood is purplish-black and the sapwood is white. Resistant to impact, bending, and pests.

When the heartwood is sealed and painted, it has a beautiful finish and is of high decorative value. It is used for high-end furniture, architecture, low tables, picture frames, etc.

Japanese Maple[Itaya Kaede]

A broadleaf tree of the maple family. Distributed nationwide from Hokkaido to Kyushu. It also lives in China and the Korean Peninsula. It is sometimes written as "Itaya Kaede".

Slightly reddish white to light yellow milky color. The surface of the wood has a silky sheen. Some of them have beautiful chirimoku and bird's-eye marks, and are highly valued as materials for musical instruments. In addition, it is used for furniture, architecture, sports equipment, and lacquerware.

Walnut

A broadleaf tree of the walnut family. Inhabits the eastern and central United States and Canada. One of the three major trees in the world.

The heartwood is light brown and the sapwood is milky white. It is an almighty wood and has been used for high-end furniture and crafts for a long time because of its beautiful grain. It was highly valued for construction, musical instruments, carving, and as a stock material for its impact resistance.

Karin

A broad-leaved tree of the leguminous family. It is commonly found in Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar and Thailand. It is a different species from the karin of the Rosaceae family, which grows in Japan and is famous for its fruits.

There are individual differences in color, such as reddish brown and yellowish red. Hard and durable, but there are also individual differences. When polished, it has a beautiful luster. It has a peculiar smell. A high-grade material used for furniture, carpentry work, and floor pillars.

The heartwood is grayish brown and the sapwood is whitish yellow. The wood grain is beautiful. It contains little oil and is resistant to water. It is used in furniture and crafts, as well as in clothing dyes and gastrointestinal medicine.

Paulownia[kiri]

A broad-leaved tree of the Scrophulariaceae family. Widely distributed throughout Japan from southern Hokkaido to the west. It is the lightest of all Japanese woods and is extremely easy to process, but its strength is inferior.

Grayish ivory. Excellent water absorption. It is used for furniture, clogs, boxes, etc. It is also used for the inner box material of safes because it has low thermal conductivity and is difficult to ignite.

Zelkova[keyaki]

A broadleaf tree of the Elm family. It is a broad-leaved tree that represents Japan and is distributed all over the country except for Hokkaido. There are precious trees in various places.
Yellow-brown to pale yellow, glossy when polished, revealing beautiful wood grain. It is one of the hardest Japanese woods, and has been widely used as a high-quality material for Japanese furniture, building materials, fittings, carvings, ship materials, drum drums, etc. In particular, it is essential for the construction of temples and shrines.

Ebony[kokutan]

A broad-leaved tree of the persimmon family. One of the three major Karaki trees. Depending on the characteristics of the wood grain, it is distinguished by different names such as genuine ebony and striped ebony, and at Kichizo, striped ebony is treated as 'ebony'. Also known as "Ebony". Makassar Ebony from Indonesia is famous.
It is dark brown and has a characteristic striped grain called shimamoku. The surface is smooth, and when polished, a unique luster is created, giving it a beauty unlike any other wood. Very heavy and sinks in water. It is also very hard and durable. A high-class material that has been used for high-end furniture, Buddhist altars, sculptures, seals, musical instruments, crafts, etc. since ancient times.

Salt land[shioji]

A broad-leaved tree of the Oleaceae family. Native to Honshu (west of the Kanto region), Shikoku, and Kyushu.

The heartwood is pale grey-brown, and the sapwood is bright pale yellow. Glossy, straight and fine grain, easy to get beautiful heather. It is used for furniture, sporting goods (such as baseball bats), architecture, and woodwork.

Rosewood [sitan]

A broad-leaved tree of the leguminous family. One of the three major Karaki trees. At Kichizo, this rosewood is treated as "rosewood". It is also called "rosewood" because the cut end of the tree immediately after felling has a rose-like scent. It is often found in hot and humid regions such as India and Madagascar.

It has a purplish reddish-brown color with blackish-purple striped grain. It is robust, heavy, and glossy, and can be lustrous with just a light polish. It is a high-grade material and is used for furniture, Buddhist altars, musical instruments, alcove pillars, carpentry work, and processed wooden products.

Island Mulberry [Shimaguwa]

"Mulberry" is a broadleaf tree of the mulberry family. Among them, the mulberry wood that grows naturally on Miyakejima and Mikurajima of the seven islands of Izu is called "Shimakuwa." A rare material, especially popular in eastern Japan.

Immediately after processing, it is bright yellow, but it changes to amber color over time due to the bitterness. It is a high-quality material with a noble luster and subtle grain, and is indispensable for Edo joinery. Island mulberry is also suitable for the classical instrument Biwa. It is also used for handicrafts.

Because it is resistant to humidity and pests, and is resistant to salt water, it has a history of being used for the decks and interior materials of luxury cruise ships, and was also used on the Queen Elizabeth II. In addition, it is used for furniture, luxury flooring, etc.

A broadleaf tree of the Rosaceae family. Inhabits the eastern United States and the Atlantic coast of Canada. Famous for its black cherry fruit.

The heartwood is light to dark reddish brown, and the sapwood is pinkish yellowish white to milky white. It smells faintly of cherry blossoms. The wood is dense, lustrous and beautiful. It is used for furniture, architecture (interior materials), and musical instruments.

Maple 

A broadleaf tree of the maple family. It lives in the northeastern United States and Canada. Famous for producing maple syrup.

Yellowish gray to pale grayish white. Polishing gives a beautiful luster. It is used for bowling lanes, pins, sports equipment (baseball bats), etc. Birdseye heather, fiddleback heather, etc. are regarded as high-grade materials, and are useful for furniture, architecture, and musical instruments.

Yakusugi

"Sugi" is a conifer of the cypress family. Among them, cedars that are over 1,000 years old and grow naturally in the mountains of Yakushima at an altitude of 500 meters or more. Representative of Japanese precious wood. A symbol of longevity, it is especially popular in western Japan.

Compared to other cedars, it has a darker skin color and a stronger scent. In addition, because it contains a lot of resin, it is resistant to decay and insects. Its annual rings are dense and beautiful, and its strength against compression, tension and bending is higher than that of other cedars. It is used for furniture, architecture, and ceiling panels.
